CHAPTER SIX

Gordon simply said, “I understand.”

They were in the living room of his apartment, Gordon clad in his usual open-backed shirt. Lynda watched him carefully for his reaction. He was perfectly calm. In perfect calm, he went to the bar at one side of the room and poured himself a glass of rum. In perfect calm, he took a swallow. In perfect calm, he looked at her studying him.

“Is that all you’re going to say?” Lynda asked.

“Oh. I’m sorry. Congratulations.” His mood did not waver.

Lynda creased her lips a bit before returning, “That doesn’t sound too excited.”

Gordon set his glass down on the bar, again perfectly calm. “I’m sorry. I know it doesn’t. It’s great news. It’s an exciting opportunity and you deserve it and I know it’s going to do good things for you. You’ve every right to be proud. Two princes personally selected and asked you to serve them. That’s good for you, Lynda, really.”

In response to what she could sense was coming, Lynda said, “But...?”

Gordon looked down for a moment, measuring his response. Then, gazing back at her, he said, “Lynda... you’ve looked at that Princewatch site. Have you... talked to other people working at the Manor? Have you listened to some things people may have said?”

“About Jared and Dus—” she caught herself, shifting self-consciously from the conversation she had had with them to the way she thought she ought to talk about them. “About Their Highnesses?”

“You were about to call them by their first names. Did they ask you to do that?”

In answer Lynda only cast her eyes away.

“They did, didn’t they?” Gordon said, knowingly.

Lynda faced him again. “They’re really nice.”

“In their place, anyone should be nice. Leading that kind of life, always having the very best of everything, never knowing what it is to have to want anything, everyone wanting to do everything for them, loved and adored by everyone, famous and celebrated at home and all over the world... Anyone in that position should be nice. Some people in that position aren’t terribly nice, but they ought to be.”

“They are nice,” Lynda protested.

“I don’t mean to say they’re not. That kind of life breeds niceness. Or at least it should.”

“You almost sound as if you resent them. Gordon, you haven’t had a hard life yourself. You’ve never had to want anything either. I don’t mean you’ve never had to work hard; I’m sure you have. But just living, having the parents you have and the life you’ve had... it can’t have been so hard that you’d resent the princes.”

“I don’t resent them,” said Gordon. “I just know them. Or I just know about them. As I said, you’ve been through that website. And you must have talked to people at the Manor, heard things. People may not be terribly loud about it, but they do talk.”

“People talking about them, that’s natural.”

“And what do they say?” asked Gordon. “I’ll put this another way. In all the pictures you’ve seen of Their Highnesses around the islands,
